Last Friday, Sociedad Portuaria El Cayao (SPEC) began operations at the first Colombian LNG regasification terminal at Cartagena de Indias, positioning the country as one of the main new players in the LNG regional market.
The country is now enlarging its natural gas offerings in order to satisfy national energy demand and guarantee reliable and competitive supply for thermal power plants in the region. “The new terminal will support Colombian thermal power generation and will prevent blackouts during dry season,” says Jose Luis Montes, SPEC’s General Manager.
After 16 months of construction, SPEC is opening this terminal that is formed by a floating storage and regasification unit, a 760 meter pier and a 10km pipeline that connects the terminal with the country’s National Transporation System.
“We are delighted to announce that we have met our commitments and expectations and our clients Tebsa, Termocandelaria and Zona Franca Celsia are now going to receive reliable and stable gas supply for their operations,” added Mr.Montes.
This project, which has generated a US$150 million investment, has become critical for the Colombian national economy as the terminal is ready to provide 400 million m3 a day, enough to satisfy 2000 MW of thermoelectric generation capacity.
Montes has highlighted and expressed gratitude for the Government support that has played a key role in developing this initiative. “We’ve been developing this project for 9 years. Since day one, we’ve tried to find the best solution together, to guarantee natural gas supply to the main thermoelectric generators in the region. Now we have achieved our goal, thanks to the government predictions, who precisely estimated that gas demand would surpass the countries production,” said Montes.
Additionally, SPEC General Manager emphasized the role of surrounding communities that have embraced and supported the project, which is going to contribute to the social and economic development of six neighbouring areas.
Jose Luis Montes, CEO at Sociedad Portuaria El Cayao (SPEC) will be speaking at the 15th CWC World LNG & Gas Series: Americas Summit in Houston on 20-23 June 2017.
