Playworks

CWC Supports Playworks

Playworks’ mission is to improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play. In 2015-16, Playworks will serve 1338 elementary schools and youth organizations across the U.S., reaching 700,000 students. Playworks Texas will serve 13 elementary schools reaching approximately 11,000 students. This school year is the 6th year of Playworks programming in Texas.

A Stanford University and Mathematica Policy Research study found that as a result of Playworks programming teachers had more time for teaching, students behaved better and were more ready to learn, and schools experienced less bullying and felt safer. Playworks also resulted in students being engaged in more vigorous physical activity.

Playworks’ programing consists of the following 5 components:

  • Recess: Coaches create a safe recess where every child feels included
  •  Junior Coaches: 4th and 5th graders serve as leaders on the playground. Junior Coaches also participate in leadership skills training during critical after school hours
  • Class Game Time: Coaches demonstrate games and healthy play in the classroom, where teachers learn Playworks methodology
  • Sports Leagues: Through girls’ basketball, coed soccer and volleyball, coaches provide students with a team experience
  • Before School Recess: Coaches provide additional time for play before school

Playworks is the leading nonprofit in the country to leverage play as a tool to promote healthy behaviors and improve the learning environment in elementary schools. Playworks’ model uses recess, a time in the school day that has been largely overlooked as an opportunity to boost learning, to implement a program that reduces bullying, provides more time for classroom teaching, and increases physical activity.

Get in the game! Volunteers can participate in school beautification, refereeing league games, fundraising event support and Board of Directors membership! For more information, contact Sheroo Mukhtiar, Playworks Texas Executive Director sheroo.mukhtiar@playworks.org
